Challenges of Living with PMDD
The PMDD Guide: Month-by-Month
Your Four-Week Cycle
Understanding your menstrual cycle can help you anticipate and manage PMDD symptoms. Here's what to expect throughout your month:
Week 1: Menstrual Phase (Days 1-5)
Your period has started, and PMDD symptoms should be improving or gone. This is often a time of relative relief and increased energy. Focus on rest and gentle movement.
Week 2: Follicular Phase (Days 6-14)
Estrogen levels are rising, and you may feel your best during this phase. This is an ideal time to tackle challenging projects, socialize, and engage in more intense exercise. Symptoms are typically minimal.
Week 3: Ovulation (Days 15-17)
A brief hormonal surge occurs around ovulation. For some women, mood and energy peak during this time. For others with PMDD, early symptoms may begin.
Week 4: Luteal Phase (Days 18-28)
Progesterone levels rise, and PMDD symptoms typically emerge. This is the time to be most proactive with symptom management. Prioritize sleep, stress reduction, and self-care.
